Fall Colors in Upstate New York

Fall Colors in Upstate New York
Every October, the Catskills and surrounding hills put on a show that rivals anything in New England. The maples turn fire-engine red, the oaks go golden, and for about two weeks, the whole region looks like it was painted by someone who went a little heavy on the saturation slider. This year I spent three weekends shooting around Oneonta and the surrounding area. The light in the morning, when the mist is still hanging in the valleys, is absolutely magical. I've been photographing fall in this area for years now, and I still find new spots. That's the thing about landscape photography. You can shoot the same area a hundred times and never take the same photo twice. My favorite shot from this season was a simple one. Sometimes the simplest compositions are the strongest.
